Cellulite – Basic Information

5 min read

Cellulite is a condition that affects both men and women (although mostly women) that causes the skin to appear dimpled. It is predominantly found on the skin on the back of the legs, the butt, and the stomach, and causes the skin to look like cottage cheese.

The severity of the cellulite can be due to a lot of reasons. A person’s age and sex are both related. Also, a person’s genetics and hormones play a factor. Their overall health and type of skin also play a role. In reality, it is difficult to say whether one cause plays a bigger role than another. Usually it is a combination of these causes that cellulite is evident.

The reason the skin appears dimpled is because collagen fibers are catching that fat and storing it beneath the visible layer of the skin. However, the fat is not being stored smoothly and evenly. Because of this, the skin forms around the different pockets of fat, and the skin appears uneven.

What makes cellulite difficult to attack is the fact that because the fat is being stored in this way, it is more difficult for the body’s natural drainage system to effectively use this fat when it needs to. When you exercise, your body uses your fat reserves for energy. However, this fat is the most difficult to reach and so it is not usually used. That is why fat causing cellulite is the last to leave the body, and therefore, the hardest to eradicate.

Cellulite may be considered unattractive, but there is certainly nothing unhealthy or unnatural about it. Even thin, healthy people can have cellulite. Vise versa, an overweight person who is not health-conscious may not have any visible cellulite at all. Like I said earlier, there are many factors.

Because there are so many possible causes of cellulite in an individual, there are many treatments available that have differing effects on each person. What may work for one person may not necessarily work for another. The smartest way to attack cellulite is to use a combination of different treatments. The first and most obvious way is through good old diet and exercise. Having a healthy diet with a regular exercise routine is a sure-fire way to improve your health and your life; the fact that it may rid you of your cellulite is an added bonus. The next thing to do is buy a quality cellulite lotion and apply it daily (or according to the instructions). These lotions are good for the skin and are a relatively inexpensive way to help battle the cellulite. If doing both of these things has not been working, then you may want to look at more expensive treatment options such as laser, Mesotherapy, and liposuction.
